JumpStart
JumpStart is an introductory program for children interested in competitive or recreational figure skating. Entrance into our JumpStart program is by invitation only. Skaters must be 4-12 years old and are talent-identified and selected from our CanSkate program. There will be games, prizes, fun “theme days”, and our annual Holiday Ice Show.
Skaters are taught in small groups by a Skate Canada Certified Coach with a maximum coach-to-student ratio of 1:10. This program teaches basic figure skating skills in a progressive and sequential manner and includes specifically designed awards and incentives. Skaters will learn correct technique in fundamental skills such as edges, stroking, jumps, spins, and musical interpretation. Dryland training is incorporated to help improve balance, flexibility, strength, and coordination.
Skaters in our JumpStart program must wear figure skates. Correct equipment is an important part of timely skill acquisition. Helmets are optional. Any questions regarding proper fitting skates and maintenance may be answered by our coaching team.
JumpStart skaters will train 1-3 days per week. We recommend a minimum of two days per week for accelerated progress. JumpStart classes are offered in four terms per year: Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer.
Please note that JumpStart is not a bridge to our Junior Private Lesson Program. Skaters are invited into our Junior program through our Junior Academy. However, if a JumpStart skater displays exceptional talent and ability, s/he may be invited into our Junior Program. We recommend that skaters 4-8 years old consider joining our Junior Academy program, as it is designed to help skaters improve faster. JumpStart skaters that meet the age criteria for our Junior Academy may move to Junior Academy at any time.
